If you have a large room in your house and want to add a bit of style, try using large area rugs. Rugs are important to the overall appearance of a room and can bring color and elegance to any room very easily.
Before you begin you'll want to measure the space you want to add the rug to. Common sizes of large rugs are 6'x9', 8'x10', 9'x12' and 12'x15'. Generally, 9'x12' is the most common size used in a living room but this really differs depending on how big your room is.
When it comes to laying out a brand new rug, be sure that any furniture you have in the room sits on the rug completely. You don't want it partly off the rug as this will look unbalanced. You can try to place pieces of furniture off the rug as well, but keep it off the rug completely as to maintain a balanced look. If you have a really large room, consider sectioning it up into smaller areas by using two or more different sized rugs. By doing this you're keeping the room more open and airy.
If you have hardwood flooring, try to surround the area rug entirely with it. You'll want about a foot or more of hardwood showing as any less and the rug will look too big for the room. Using a rug on wood flooring is also a good way to protect it, in addition to keeping noise levels down
A rug with a simple pattern or soft color is great if you have a busy interior. A lighter color helps keep the room open and spacious. You may also want to work with a darker colored rug to add some coziness. When it comes right down to it, picking a color or pattern is a personal preference and there are so many options out there that even the most picky designer is destined to find something that suits them.
