Karastan rugs are some of the best - if not the best - machine made rugs in the world. Made in the USA, they were first produced by Marshall Fields in 1928. They were the first rugs made from machines that could compete with hand-made rugs as far as quality was concerned and still be less expensive. Since 1928, the company has continued to produce innovative products and is a market leader in the rug industry.
Karastan makes their rugs from wool imported from New Zealand and the company is the largest imported of New Zealand wool on the globe. This type of wool is considered to be the purest and best wool produced in the world and gives each rug an extreme quality feel. Since the rugs are made from wool they are non-allergenic - meaning they won't be a place for bacteria or dust mites to breed.
The company continues to produce unique colors and pattern from various innovative processes. For example, the TeaWash was introduced in 1997 and gives rugs an aged and vintage look right off the production press. It takes several steps to produce this look. Shapura was introduced in 2006 and is a process which gives a traditional rug design.
Another process is called AntiqueWash. Similar to TeaWash, this process gives the rug are much more antique look and feel. Finally, LustreWash enables the rugs to harmonize their colors and gives the rug an amazing softness that is typically only seen in aged, hand made rugs.
